Devil's Dyke

Catch the 77 bus from central Brighton. The bus is open-top during school summer hols.

Wow - what a view! Described by John Constable as “the grandest view in the world”, the panoramic views over the chalk valley (the largest in the UK!) stretch as far as Ashdown Forest, Box Hill, the Hog’s Back and the Isle of Wight. Legend has it that the Devil dug the valley to drown the parishioners of the Weald. Scientists, however, believe it was formed in the last Ice Age!

* Stunning panoramic views over the longest, widest and deepest dry

   valley in the UK

* Explore the remains of an Iron Age hill fort

* Discover where the devil and his wife are said to be buried (purple walk).

Legend has it that if you run backwards seven times around these two

humps, whilst holding your breath, the Devil will appear!

* Look out for the remains of the Victorian funicular railway station

* In summer, walk through a meadow full of orchids and butterflies.
