Situated right on the Sussex/Surrey border, the museum is mainly indoors and laid out on one level. There is ramp access, making the museum wheelchair/pushchair friendly.
Three planes are located outside the hanger, including the huge Shackleton! There are plenty of picnic tables in this area - bring your own food or purchase light refreshments (hot and cold drinks, ice creams and chocolate bars) from the museum shop.
The covered observation shelter beside Gatwick's runway is approx. 500m away from the museum. Access to the shelter is across a field - a pathway was mown into the grass when we visited (July), enabling easy access. A picnic table (+ bin!) are also situated here!
Expect to spend 1.5-2 hours here; or longer if you stay to watch the planes take-off and land for a while.
