There is little in the way of shade on this walk, so it is perhaps best-avoided on the hottest summer days. On the other hand, the ground drains well, making this walk relatively mud-free, even in winter.

This walk is popular with dog-owners, but please note that due to grazing sheep and cattle dogs must be kept under close control.

We have previously done this walk (in summer) whilst pushing a Maclaren-style pushchair. It was hard work pushing uphill, due to roots and gullies. Not recommended, unless you have several adults to share the load!

The Route:

From Hollies car park walk past the information board and head downhill (away from the road) on a wide grassy track. Continue your descent for approximately 1 km until you reach the enclosure known as the Airman's Grave. From the memorial, continue down hill for another 200m until you reach a stream.

Turn right and cross the bridge over the stream. From here, climb for approx. 250m. At the brow of the hill and at a junction, turn right and remain on the wide ascending track for about 1 km.

After passing through light woodland and with Stonehill car park about 100m ahead, turn right onto another wide, grassy track. Continue on this path for another 700m, until you return to Hollies car park.
