Petworth is an all-day adventure with lots to entertain children, including:

  • Mansion Trail - use the map to find the animals hidden in some of the many artworks (adults will love this too!)

  • Look out for the toy dogs hidden around the mansion rooms.

  • Discover what life was like for the Servants at Petworth. See the historic kitchen, dress up as a scullery maid and learn about the roles of various household staff

Additional, events for children during school holidays (there is generally a small charge for these).

Owned by the National Trust, 17th century Petworth House was built to rival the palaces of Europe and is filled to the brim with world-class paintings and sculptures by well known artists including Turner, Flaxman and van Dyck.

Visitors to Petworth can view the state rooms and the Servants' Quarters (all on the ground floor). The ground floor is fully accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, with the exception of the Chapel, which has short steps descending to ground level.

There is a cafe within the House complex, serving sandwiches, cakes, drinks and a small selection of hot meals and soups (hot food 12-2pm). Children's lunchboxes are available too with a range of items to choose from. Picnics are allowed in the grounds.

The grounds surrounding Petworth House are extensive and comprise a 700 acre Deer Park (home to a herd of 700 fallow deer) and adjoining Pleasure Ground (a popular type of Georgian garden) with a wooded walk, open spaces and monuments. Please note, there are no formal flower gardens at Petworth. See our guide to Petworth Deer Park for more information.

Dogs are welcome in the Pleasure Grounds and Deer Park, but not in the House. Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas.
