Uppark House & Garden
Uppark House is just a 5 minute drive from Harting Down. A great spot for a longer walk!
Today, Uppark House stands proudly on a hill top surrounding by glorious gardens with far-reaching views. However, tragedy struck in 1989 when much of the Georgian house was destroyed by fire! Learn about the fire and subsequent incredible restoration (the most complex ever undertaken by the National Trust) during your visit. Our daughter was captivated by the short film shown in the house! Some of Uppark's best bits for families include:
I Spy house trail - search for the items shown in the handy trail book whilst exploring the rooms of the house and servant's quarters. Notice the comfort of life ‘upstairs’, in contrast with the ‘downstairs’ world of the servants!
Marvel at the huge 18th century doll's house
Play ball games or fly a kite in the South Meadow (own equipment required)
Run free in the beautiful open grounds
Additional events for children during school holidays (there is generally a small charge for these).

It's difficult to compete with the grandeur of nearby Petworth, but Uppark House does a fantastic job with its incredible story of restoration, beautiful setting and giant dolls house which is almost 270 years old! There is plenty to see here and we would recommend a visit to those families with National Trust membership. Visitors should expect to spend approximately half a day exploring the house and grounds.
The house and servant's quarters are accessible to wheelchairs. However, due to space restrictions, pushchairs are not permitted in the house - they can be left under cover by the house entrance. Hip-carrying infant seats are available for loan in the house.
Outside, the intimate gardens give way to spacious lawns and a meadow in which to play. The grounds are partly accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs (some slopes and steps). A map detailing an accessible route around the grounds is available from the Visitor Reception, but please note that wheelchair access can be limited in wet weather, as most of the garden is laid to lawn.
Dogs (on short leads) are welcome in the grounds and woodland, but not in the buildings.
The cafe at Uppark serves home cooked light lunches, hot drinks and cakes. Children can select items for a pick’n’mix lunch box. Highchairs and a microwave for warming baby food are available.
