Great Sussex Animal Attractions Now Open!

With the school holidays almost upon us its time for new ideas and new places to visit! We’ve decided to expand I Spy Fun to include some great local businesses that are beginning to re-open.

Sussex has fantastic local attractions, but not all of them are open yet. So we’ve taken some of the hard work out of tracking down who is open and what the current arrangements are for visiting.

Our daughter LOVES animals, so this week we’re focussing on family farms and zoos. If you’re looking for a day out with animals - read on!

The BWC team and all the animals are looking forward to welcoming visitors once again from Sunday 5th July. This small zoo is home to over 40 different species of native wildlife and has large natural enclosures that reflect wild habitats.

Although small indoor exhibits (such as the Nocturnal House) must remain closed at this time, much of the Centre is outdoors so visitors will still see most of the wonderful wildlife.

The Coffee Shop will be offering a limited selection of drinks, pre-packaged foods and ice-creams. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and use the socially distanced picnic areas.

From Saturday 4th July the farm café will be open with a special outdoor service in the garden. In addition to the usual breakfasts, lunches, cakes and light refreshments, delicious barbecued food will be available on Saturdays and Sundays and wood-fired pizzas on Fridays. A tractor and long-drop slide will keep the kids amused in the garden whilst you soak up the sun.

The farm and farm shop are open to visit. Visitors can see some animals (sheep, pigs, cattle, turkeys and chickens when we visited), though at this time of year, many of them are dispersed across the farm, so are a bit less accessible than in the colder months. Even so, the farm is a nice place to wander around, with wonderful Ashdown Forest scenery. Our suggested walking route, taking in the farm and surrounding countryside is 2.8 km – see map.

Opening Hours: 10.00-4.00, Weds to Sunday inclusive.

Follow the trail to explore the farm and meet a large range of animals – Shetland ponies, donkeys, pigs, goats, alpacas, ducks, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, small furries and birds. Then relax with a coffee whilst watching the kids run off some energy in the outdoor play area.
