Let's Go Fly A Kite In Sussex

Looking for an activity that the whole family can enjoy together - why not give kite flying a go?

 

Children of all ages LOVE flying kites! Not only is it exhilarating and great exercise, it also provides the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together trying to keep the kite in the air as long as you can :-)

 

The five adventures below have been handpicked with kite-flying in mind. Like everything on I Spy Fun, there are no entrance fees - so get out in the fresh air and make the most of a beautiful breezy day.

Not got a kite? Why not spend the morning making one with the kids. There are hundreds of free, step-by-step guides online which require only basic household items. Making your kite is a great wet-weather activity!

CISSBURY RING

Findon, Worthing, West Sussex

​

Climb up to the site of the largest Iron Age hill fort in Sussex. There is plenty of open space here - perfect for flying a kite!

* Stunning views from the top of the rampart

* Admire the free-roaming ponies

* Easy, free parking

HARTING DOWN

South Harting, Petersfield, West Sussex/Hampshire Border

 

Harting Down (managed by the National Trust) is a glorious area of open chalk downland. There are some great hills to run down here - brilliant for launching kites!

What it's Great For:

* Spectacular 360 degree views - including across to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight

* Photo opportunities galore

* Ample parking (free for National Trust members)

DEVIL'S DYKE

Poynings, Brighton

 

Legend has it that the Devil dug the valley here to drown the parishioners of the Weald! Described by John Constable as "the grandest view in the world", the hillsides at Devil's Dyke are wonderful places to fly a kite.

​What it's Great For:

* Wow - what a view!

* Easy, stress-free walking - simply follow the coloured arrow way-marks.

* Devil's Dyke was home to a funfair in Victorian times. Can you spot the remains of the funicular railway station?

CROWLINK

Between Eastbourne and Seaford, East Sussex

 

An outstanding combination of rolling hills and stunning clifftop views make this adventure in the South Downs National Park unmissable! The walk to the coastline cliffs is gently downhill from the car park.

What it's Great For:

* Sea air and stunning white cliffs

* Wide grassy paths are perfect for launching kites!

* Ample parking (free for National Trust members)

BUTTS BROW

Eastbourne, East Sussex

No huge hills to climb here, as the car park is right at the top of the Downs! The terrain at Butts Brow is gently rolling, and the hillsides of open chalk downland usually provide a breeze strong enough to fly a kite.

* Amazing panoramic views over Eastbourne and the coast

* Scenic circular walk

* Ample car parking
