Free Places to Visit in & Around Lewes

There's no doubt that Lewes is a photogenic town! It's hilly too(!) and packed with old-world charm.

The historic High Street is full of intriguing independent shops just waiting to be explored. A 1000 year old Norman Castle stands proudly at the top of the town, whilst the flatter, eastern end is dominated by Harvey's Brewery.

Lewes is a wonderful place to explore on foot. Free attractions include the impressive Priory Park and Ruins and the Railway Land Nature Reserve, a 27-acre wildlife haven situated in the heart of the town! Nearby Raystede animal sanctuary is also a fantastic place to visit with children of all ages!.

For active families, the hike to the top of nearby Mount Caburn is a must. Alternatively, head to the top of Firle Beacon for far-reaching views and gentler gradients!

Lewes has a population of around 17,000. Brighton is just 15 min away, by train and direct trains to London Victoria take around 1 hr 30 min.
